    What’s Next for Online Piracy

From SOPA, PIPA and OPEN – the Stop Online Piracy Act, Protect IP Act in the Senate and Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act – to the take down of file sharing giant MegaUpload, online piracy is all the buzz right now. As internet protestors made a stand on January 18th to keep the Internet uncensored, we took a minute to reflect on what could happen if any of these legislations did pass. What are the impacts they could have on enterprise social networking, Software as a Service (SaaS)/Cloud companies, and how could it restrain the current growth of international business?

SOPA, which has been dropped for the time being, represents a fundamental change in the way the Internet works today and could undermine all SaaS companies and working in the Enterprise 2.0 space. This poses a great threat to many enterprise social networking providers, such as Socialtext who have shared hosting with their customers. Additionally, if this bill was passed, it could have broken-down the advancements made in international business if other countries followed suit and disabled the ability to provide services globally.

At Socialtext, customers use our technology to interact and share socially across the enterprise, from marketing to customer support, engineering, research and more. We were the first company to deliver enterprise social software and are focused on delivering a SaaS platform that enables social collaboration, allowing employees to share knowledge with their colleagues and teams. In addition to sharing internal knowledge and documents, customers also share information off the web, which can pose a problem if the sites and/or content shared comes from a site deemed infringed. In result, customers (especially those using extranets) would have to self-police themselves or face substantial penalties.

After strong protests and, according to PC World, $4.5 million people signing the Google anti-SOPA and PIPA petition, the bill is currently being assessed and reworked. So, what does the future hold for Internet security? Will OPEN gain more ground than its predecessors, SOPA and PIPA? Only time will tell as SOPA sponsor and Chair of the House Judiciary Committee Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) continues to work on getting an antipiracy legislation passed.

For more thoughts on this please check out my special guest piece, “SOPA: Dead but Not Forgotten” on TMCnet.com and featured interview on Technorati.

If your organization is looking to deploy social software, but you’re concerned about whether or not your employees will embrace the new tools, then we’re here to help.

One of the keys to successful adoption of social software is finding ways to integrate “social features” with the core processes that run your business today. For example, augmenting your existing Contact Management, Financial Reporting, Learning Management and Content Repositories, makes it easy for your staff to use the new social features “in-the-flow” of their daily tasks.

People don’t want a new way to work, they want a better way – and this webinar will help you learn how to provide it.

    Presenters

Rob Koplowitz Guest speaker, Rob Koplowitz, Vice President & Principal Analyst at independent research firm, Forrester Research, Inc. will discuss the various ways enterprise social software vendors are integrating their offerings with other tools. He’ll covere the benefits and best practices of integration, including a case study of how accounting firm Hayes Knight has integrated Socialtext into their customer support business processes, enabling them to respond faster to the needs of their clients.
Shafayet Imam Shafayet Imam, Senior Systems Architect at Equity Trust Company will discuss how they are using Socialtext as the company’s internal communication framework for crucial data and information that impact every employee on a daily basis. He will share the success factors as well as some of the lessons learnt around implementing an effective platform based on Socialtext.

Socialtext Integrates introNetworks Visual Matching Engine To Help Connect Colleagues

Socialtext announced a new product offering today that delivers introNetworks’ powerful Visual Matching Engine™ inside Socialtext’s enterprise social networking platform. This robust integration improves people’s ability to pull together relevant colleagues and solve business challenges together in real-time.

The integration includes 3 new widgets for use in Socialtext:

    • Social Radar: This visualization of a user’s best matches can be placed on a Dashboard, embedded in a Profile, and used on Group pages to show how the members of a Group are all related to each other by Skills, Passions, Experience and Interests.
    • Attribute Selector: This interactive tool gives users the ability to not only select attributes that describe themselves but specify how important each attribute is. When words are ranked from Important to Most Important, the embedded engine can make extremely precise matches.
    • Profile Attributes: This embeddable widget shows how users describe themselves using the Attribute Selector and which ones they have in common with the person viewing their Profile. Used to help find common interests and subject matter experts, this simple and powerful visualization is a key addition to the Profile page.

More information about each component can be found on the introNetworks site.

Socialtext Chairman, Customer to Speak at Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston

I’m pleased to announce that Socialtext’s chairman and co-founder, Ross Mayfield, will be a keynote speaker at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston on Wednesday, June 22, at 10:15 a.m. eastern.

The event will also feature Socialtext customer the American Hospital Association (AHA). Karthik Chakkarapani, the AHA’s IT Director of Technology Solutions & Operations, will be hosting a session about how that organization built a vibrant social intranet on Socialtext. Karthik will speak Thursday morning (June 23).

Ross is acknowledged across the industry (even by our competitors) as a pioneer in the world of enterprise social networking. He co-founded Socialtext a full three years before Andy McAfee published his famous “Enterprise 2.0” paper for MIT Sloan Management review. He has been an advocate for utilizing social software to improve business processes and the way we work together in a collaborative context.

Last year, our CEO, Eugene Lee, gave his “Social Layer” keynote at E20. Eugene encouraged the industry to embrace social software as a layer that spans all systems and applications inside a company, rather than silo them off into point applications (like a CRM or ERP system). We have built on that vision this year with our customers via the use of Socialtext Connect.

I can’t share too much about Ross’s talk yet, but here’s the description we submitted for the Enterprise 2.0 website that is now public. You can watch it live on E20 TV (free with registration).

The Social Software Evolution, Not Revolution

Social Software in the Enterprise adapts the best of the web with practices that make it work in the context of an organization. In this keynote, Socialtext Chairman and Co-founder Ross Mayfield will chart this evolution over the last ten years. Core patterns that have emerged help form strategic planning assumptions for Enterprises. But there are also core anti-patterns in social software deployments that fail to account for the context of an organization and their existing culture, processes, and infrastructure. While creative, they lead to tactical destruction. Understanding these evolutionary forces is critical for any strategic implementation seeking change and growth.

Karthik, who presents Thursday, plans to cover the following:

Consumer-oriented social media platforms are transforming the way that people communicate and accelerating the spread of information at the speed of light. This session provides an overview of Enterprise Social Collaboration, how to develop an effective strategy and implementation plan, and best practices and adoption strategies, as well as a demo of AHA’s collaboration platform using Socialtext. AHA has built a vibrant social intranet running on Socialtext and its success is largely due to utilizing enterprise social networking to enhance existing business processes and systems.

Eugene, our CEO, and many Socialtext executives will also be on hand. We look forward to seeing you in Boston!

    Socialtext Wins TiE 50 Award

I’m proud to share with you that Socialtext was named a TiE 50 Award winner. Based nearby in Santa Clara, TiE is “a global, not-for-profit network of entrepreneurs and professionals dedicated to the advancement of entrepreneurship.”

TiE provides a platform for mentoring, networking & education, to entrepreneurs with over 14,000 members in 54 chapters across 13 countries. Socialtext, which TiE acknowledged as the first social software company, won the award in the category of software and cloud computing, and Eugene, our CEO, will be speaking at their annual TieCon event on Friday in Santa Clara.

The award puts Socialtext in some great company. According to TiE, which stands for Talent, Ideas and Enterprise, previous winners have attracted more than $20 billion in investments. Of the winners, about 42 companies have been acquired, merged or gone public.

Eugene had this to say prior to my posting the news today.

“Socialtext was founded on the idea that we could build a company that helps people perform their best work together,” he says. “This TiE award is a nice acknowledgement of the hard work our team does to deliver enterprise social networking tools that people expect at work, and that meets the needs of world-class IT departments.”

Socialtext Is #1 and Now Runs On VMware

    Introducing The Socialtext Virtual Appliance

Leveraging Social Software in Your Private Cloud

As one of the leading SaaS providers, Socialtext firmly believes in the importance of cloud based solutions. However, our experience has taught us that some companies have strict IT requirement which dictate that all information be stored behind the firewall in their private cloud.

To meet these needs, Socialtext has just introduced our Virtual Appliance on VMware. It complements our existing deployment options, which includes traditional hosting (single or multi-tenant), as well as a secure server appliance. Our new VMware option helps companies leverage their existing computing resources as they scale social software throughout the enterprise.

We love giving our customers choices, and the Virtual Appliance is another option in the Socialtext arsenal that we’re really proud of. Read more…

    Socialtext Is #1

At the start of April, InformationWeek released the results of their Enterprise 2.0 Vendor Evaluation Survey, and Socialtext was ranked #1 in overall performance. It’s important to note that this was not an analyst report conducted via vendor interviews. Instead the results are based on the feedback of more than 600 IT professionals, business people just like you. Our winning performance in this report reinforces our belief that the effectiveness of tools is not based on a checklist of features, but by integrating social software into the core-business processes. We’re proud of our results and would like to thank everyone who relies on our solutions to help make their organization successful. Read more…

    Customer Success

This month we have several new customer success stories to share with you. First is The ClimateWorks Foundation, a global organization that helps prevent dangerous climate change tied to global warming. With teams focused on transportation, energy efficiency, renewable energy and more, ClimateWorks needed a central, secure place to harness knowledge and share ideas openly across these sectors. The full story on how ClimateWorks uses Socialtext as their social intranet can be found here. Second is ISS Mexico, the country’s largest provider of cleaning, maintenance and catering services. With 20 offices spread throughout the country, IIS Mexico turned to Socialtext to help them connect people with the colleagues and information they require to get their jobs done. Learn more about the benefits IIS Mexico is experiencing, here. Finally, Forrester Research has just published a new paper highlighting the importance of integration between enterprise systems of record and social tools. In it they highlight Socialtext customer Hayes Knight, explaining how they have integrated Socialtext into the core business processes their accountants and advisors use to answer the tax and auditing questions asked by their customers. Read more about how Hayes Knight uses Socialtext to create a “social layer” across their applications here.

    Socialtext Cross Country Tour

On April 14th, we kicked off our cross country tour in New York City. The goal of these events is to provide attendees information presented by our customers, not sales pitches from us. They hear about real world implementations and learn about proven business results. In NYC, our main speaker was Anand Padmanabhan, CIO of NYU Stern School of Business. Anand and his team has deployed social software to nearly 10,000 faculty, students, and staff at NYU Stern, fundamentally transforming communication between those constituencies. Read more about the event, including Anand’s slides here. Our next event is being held in Chicago. How We’re Leveraging Scale to Improve Socialtext

At Socialtext, we’re proud to offer a flexible software as a service (SaaS) business model that delivers the enterprise social tools people need to perform their best work — but with the security, flexibility and integration required by IT to make them a strategic asset inside their organization.

As business models in the Enterprise 2.0 world evolve, we’ve examined how we can streamline our sales, trial and provisioning process to get companies up and running even faster. The launch of the Socialtext Virtual Appliance — a VMware image that contains the most current version of Socialtext — created a huge opportunity for us to move in that direction.

So today, we’re announcing two new offerings that build on that vision.

    1. The Virtual Appliance Trial

Launching in May, prospective Socialtext customers can select, try, evaluate and buy their Socialtext solution by downloading the Virtual Appliance directly from Socialtext.com. This delivers IT a full private instance of the Socialtext platform, without encountering any of the friction that hardware-supported, traditional, behind-the-firewall deployments usually entail. It also gives companies the ability to host their data as they try Socialtext, something we know the market craves as some freemium models hold IT captive to buy their data back from vendors.

    2. Expanding channel partner programs

Today we’re also announcing the ability of a new distribution channel via our partner program. In addition to our referral, reseller and integrator partners, we’ll be rolling out the ability to distribute Socialtext via a network of OEM Partners. In doing so, we’re making it easier for traditional application vendors to make Socialtext a social layer that spans the entire enterprise. To learn more, please e-mail partners@socialtext.com.

As we are now in a position to insert scale and leverage into our business model better than ever before, we have reorganized our resources in the way to best capitalize on these opportunities. We look forward to passing the benefits of scale and leverage on to our customers, and to the exciting work in the months ahead.
