Socialtext Announces New Yammer Migration Service

Offering brings IT greater control, more predictable costs, and better security

January 6, 2011, Palo Alto, California

Today Socialtext™ announced a free migration offering that allows companies with employees using Yammer™ to move to Socialtext for a discounted rate, enabling IT to predict and control costs, manage users, and eliminate the security risks associated with Yammer in the enterprise. The new offering helps IT departments manage enterprise conversations more securely – behind the firewall if necessary – and integrate microblogging with a more robust collaboration platform.

“As the first company in the enterprise social software market, we understand that IT needs to centrally manage communications mechanisms like microblogging, which has become much more than just a 'private Twitter for the enterprise,'” says Socialtext CEO Eugene Lee. “After discovering a free instance of Yammer inside their company, many CIOs and IT directors have told us that they have to pay Yammer just to get control of their data and manage their users. This offering will help them transition microblogging to a more secure social software platform, where they own their data and control how many licensed users they'd like to pay for."

With Socialtext, companies can choose from a variety of deployment models to fit IT requirements. In addition to single-tenant or multi-tenant software as a service (SaaS) hosted in the cloud, customers can also choose an on-site SaaS Appliance that sits behind their firewall.

Having microblogging as part of a broader platform can contribute more substantial business value than as a standalone application, especially when integrated with other collaboration tools and existing systems of record throughout the enterprise that IT manages.

“Despite its potential to achieve benefits, it will be difficult for microblogging as a standalone function to achieve widespread adoption within the enterprise,” writes Jeffrey Mann, a research vice president for collaboration at Gartner, Inc. “While mainstream enterprises are unlikely to adopt standalone, single-purpose microblogging products, we expect that microblogging will spur interest as an important contributor to activity streams. An activity stream is a notification mechanism that provides updates to subscribers about the activities or events that relate to another individual.” 1

Socialtext customers have access to a broader, more robust set of collaboration applications and a universal activity stream. In addition to Socialtext Signals for microblogging, Socialtext's full social software platform includes online workspaces, blogs, spreadsheets, activity streams and Socialtext Explore. With Socialtext Connect, an integration offering, activity streams can surface events from critical systems of record across the enterprise, such as Salesforce.com™ CRM and Microsoft SharePoint™ document management.

Customers who have a free instance of Yammer with more than 100 users can switch to Socialtext Signals, and get a hosted or on-premise microblogging appliance, for an annual fee that's 20 percent less (per user per month) than Yammer's list price.* Paying Yammer customers with more than 100 users can take advantage of the free migration service, and receive Socialtext Signals and Socialtext People for free for a year if they purchase the entire Socialtext social software platform for two years.
